About Tuckahoe Child Psychology

Dr. Sandra Henderson is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with 20 years of experience in understanding healthy child development. She employs a strengths-based approach, which celebrates a child’s natural gifts while working on their areas of challenge. Dr. Henderson received an undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond and has earned two doctoral degrees: one in Child Development from the Catholic University of America and another in Clinical Child Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her internship and fellowship years at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, part of the VCU Health System.

Dr. Henderson spent the first part of her career involved in teaching and research. She has published several articles on parenting and children’s social and emotional development while serving on the faculty at University of Virginia. She subsequently earned a clinical degree and opened a private practice in Richmond, VA devoted to helping children and adolescents reach their best potential.

Dr. Henderson is an Affiliate Assistant Professor at VCU, where she has taught classes in Child Psychology, Lifespan Development, and for the past 10 years, graduate Advanced Child Psychopathology. Dr. Henderson’s research and current teaching keep her on the cutting edge of best practices for delivering effective, evidence-based treatments. She utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as family and play therapies to achieve the best results for her young clients.

Dr. Henderson is married with three children. She enjoys running (2x Boston marathon finisher), college sports, outdoor activities, traveling with her family, and reading. She has participated in several community groups and holds a life-long passion for supporting the mental health needs of all children.
